Transport by Destination — From Myeongdong, Hongdae & Gangnam to Busan
Contents

The fast trains to Busan, KTX and SRT, start from different stations. KTX leaves from Seoul Station, SRT from Suseo Station in the Gangnam area, and express buses from the Express Bus Terminal in Gangnam.

So "just take the KTX" isn't always the right answer. The fastest and cheapest choice changes depending on whether you're staying in Myeongdong, Hongdae, or Gangnam. For a downtown base like Myeongdong or Hongdae, the KTX from Seoul Station makes sense; if you're in the Gangnam area, the SRT from Suseo Station or an express bus from the Express Bus Terminal is more convenient.

Fares and travel times are as of 2026-06, and they vary by departure date, seat class, and exchange rate. Just check once on the official site or app before you book.

At a Glance: 4 Ways to Busan (as of 2026-06)

Option Departure Arrival Travel time One-way fare (standard seat)
KTX Seoul Station Busan Station (downtown) about 2 hr 15 min – 2 hr 40 min approx. ₩59,800
SRT Suseo Station (Gangnam area) Busan Station (downtown) about 2 hr 10 min approx. ₩52,600
Express bus Seoul Express Bus Terminal (Gangnam) Busan Central Bus Terminal (Nopo-dong) about 4 hr approx. ₩26,700 (standard) · ₩39,700 (deluxe) · ₩44,000+ (premium)
Flight (GMP→PUS) Gimpo Airport Gimhae Airport about 55 min – 1 hr flight approx. $40–100 (₩50,000s–130,000s)

For speed, KTX and SRT are the clear winners (downtown to downtown). For fare, the express bus is the cheapest. A flight looks fast at about 1 hour in the air, but once you add airport transfers and check-in, the total is 3.5–4 hours, not much different from the KTX.

Busan Station, Busan Central Bus Terminal, and Gimhae Airport are all in different locations. It's worth factoring in your final destination within Busan as well.

Best Choice by Where You're Staying

Myeongdong base → KTX (Seoul Station)

Myeongdong is the major tourist area closest to Seoul Station.

  • Myeongdong Station (Line 4) → Seoul Station is 2 stops, about 4 min, with a transit-card fare of about ₩1,550
  • If you have a lot of luggage, a taxi to Seoul Station is about 10 min — an easy distance, no problem
  • KTX runs from Seoul Station roughly 05:15–22:30, with Busan-bound trains every 20–30 min at peak times

For a downtown base like Myeongdong, Euljiro, Jongno, or Itaewon, the KTX (Seoul Station) is the answer. If you backtrack all the way down to Suseo Station in Gangnam just to take the SRT, you'll actually lose time.

Hongdae base → KTX (Seoul Station)

Hongdae also has good access to Seoul Station.

  • From Hongik Univ. Station, take an AREX all-stop train or the Gyeongui–Jungang Line toward Seoul Station
  • There's also a Line 2 route transferring at City Hall or Sindorim, but if you have a lot of luggage, the direct AREX line is the smoothest
  • The Hongdae, Hapjeong, and Yeonnam areas also default to the KTX (Seoul Station)

Gangnam base → SRT (Suseo Station) or express bus (Express Bus Terminal)

If you're in the Gangnam, Jamsil, Bundang, or Samseong-dong areas, there's no need to head all the way up to Seoul Station.

  • SRT Suseo Station: connected to subway Line 3 and the Bundang Line. It's easy to reach from the Gangnam area, and the fare is about 10% cheaper than the KTX (approx. ₩52,600). The travel time is actually a bit faster (about 2 hr 10 min)
  • Express bus: Seoul Express Bus Terminal (= Gangnam Express Bus Terminal) connects directly to the Line 3, 7, and 9 transfer station. The fare is the cheapest (standard from about ₩26,700), but it takes about 4 hours

There's one catch. The SRT is not covered by the KR Pass (Korea Rail Pass). If you plan to use a pass, you need to take the KTX (Seoul Station).

KTX vs SRT — What's the Difference

Both reach Busan in about 2-plus hours, so they're similar. What differs is the operator and departure station.

Operator Korail SR

For a downtown base plus speed, choose the KTX; for a Gangnam base plus a slightly lower fare, choose the SRT.

Where Foreigners Get Stuck Most Often: Booking & Payment

Even once you've picked an option, it's common to hit a wall at the booking stage where an overseas card won't go through.

Why payment fails

The Korail and SRT payment systems are built mainly around domestic cards, so overseas cards go through an extra verification step (such as 3D Secure). If your issuing bank doesn't support the Korean-style 3D Secure protocol, you get declined at the final verification step. The trouble is that there's no clear message telling you which step failed.

How to fix it (in order of priority)

  1. Try the desktop global web: if the app blocks you, accessing the Korail global website from a PC browser tends to be more reliable for overseas cards
  2. All-in-one booking app: LACHA lets you sign up without a Korean phone number or ID verification and book KTX and express buses with overseas payment methods like Alipay and WeChat Pay. Overseas cards often get blocked at the 3D Secure verification step on official sites, but LACHA supports mobile payments like Alipay, so payment goes through without that step
  3. Buying in person at the station counter: unmanned kiosks are mainly for domestic cards and may block you, but staffed ticket counters can often sell you a ticket with an overseas card

For express buses, the Kobus English web (kobus.co.kr) or the LACHA app books relatively smoothly.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1. Going from Myeongdong to Busan, which is better, KTX or SRT? A. Myeongdong is close to Seoul Station (2 stops on Line 4), so the KTX is the better choice. The SRT departs from Suseo Station in Gangnam, so from Myeongdong you'd have to backtrack downward, which wastes time.

Q2. What's the cheapest option? A. The express bus is the cheapest at about ₩26,700 for a standard seat. In return, it takes about 4 hours — nearly double the KTX and SRT (about 2-plus hours).

Q3. Is flying the fastest? A. The flight itself is about 1 hour, but once you add the trips to and from Gimpo Airport and Gimhae Airport plus check-in and security, the total is 3.5–4 hours. That's not much different from the KTX (about 2 hr 15 min), which goes downtown to downtown.

Q4. My overseas card won't work for a KTX booking. What do I do? A. Try the PC global web instead of the app, or use an all-in-one booking app like LACHA or a staffed ticket counter at the station. Whether payment goes through can vary by card issuer, station, and timing.

Q5. Busan Station, Busan Central Bus Terminal, or Gimhae Airport — where should I arrive? A. The KTX and SRT arrive at Busan Station (downtown), express buses at Busan Central Bus Terminal (Nopo-dong, on the outskirts), and flights at Gimhae Airport (45–60 min from the center by subway or bus). Pick the arrival point closest to your final destination within Busan.

Q6. Can I book KTX and express buses in one app? A. Yes — with LACHA you can compare and book KTX and express buses in a single app. You sign up without a Korean phone number or ID verification, and pay with overseas payment methods like Alipay and WeChat Pay.
