Legally staying people such as E-7 holders and D-2 graduates who score above the threshold on age, education, Korean ability and income (F-2-7). Also people who want to live and work in a population-decline area (F-2-R).

The usual threshold is 80 points or more, but the scoring table changes every year. Holding F-2-7 for 3 years opens the path to permanent residence (F-5), so it is worth looking at first if you want to settle long term. The regional type (F-2-R) needs a local government recommendation first and comes with an obligation to live in that area for 2 years or more; the recommendation stage is the local government's business, which limits how much can be done for you.

Where you file it
Immigration Office (출입국·외국인청·사무소); you must book your visit in advance. For the region-specific type, you need a recommendation from the local government (지방자치단체) first
Papers you usually need
- Integrated application form and the points sheet you fill in yourself
- Passport and Alien Registration Card (외국인등록증)
- Degree certificate and academic transcript
- Proof of Korean ability (TOPIK), or Social Integration Program (사회통합프로그램) completion certificate
- Certificate of income amount (소득금액증명) and proof of employment
- Local government recommendation letter (for F-2-R)
