How to Sign Up for KakaoTalk Without a Korean Number — Complete Guide for Foreigners

In Korea, everyone wants to use KakaoTalk for everything—restaurant reservations, room inquiries, work communications. From bookings to secondhand deals to group chats, KakaoTalk is the single point of contact. But when someone says "Send me a message on KakaoTalk," many people get stuck right at signup because they don't have a Korean phone number. This is especially true right after arrival or for short-term visitors.

Bottom line: you can sign up for KakaoTalk with an international phone number. Just use the number you had back home and complete SMS verification. However, messenger registration and Korean service identity verification are completely separate things, so financial features like Kakao Pay won't work with just an international number.

If you haven't arrived in Korea yet, it's safest to complete registration and verification while you're still in your home country. What Works and What Doesn't

KakaoTalk messenger is an international service that accepts international numbers, but the Korean financial and verification features layered on top are based on Korea's telecom real-name system and require separate identity verification.

Official guidance on international number registration can be found by searching for "international number" in the Kakao Customer Center (cs.kakao.com) help section. This page gets updated first when policies change, so it's worth checking before you sign up.

Choose Your Situation First — Four Paths

Even within "no Korean number," what you should do depends on what you have in hand right now.

• ① Still in your home country (before departure): This is the easiest case. Sign up and verify with your home country number now. Just follow the 'Step-by-Step Registration' below.
• ② Arrived in Korea and your home SIM/roaming is active: Verify and sign up with that number, then immediately proceed to 'Always Link Your Kakao Account (Email)'. Your home number will likely get disconnected at some point.
• ③ Only have a Korean prepaid SIM (010): You can sign up for KakaoTalk itself with that number—you just need to receive SMS. But having the line active doesn't mean financial identity verification will work. Check the boundaries in 'Limitations of Korean Service Integration' below.
• ④ Already have your Alien Registration Card (ARC) and a formal line: If you already have a KakaoTalk account, go to 'How to Keep Your Account When Changing Numbers'. If you don't have an account, just sign up fresh with that number.

Step-by-Step Registration (International Number)

Step 1 — Install the App (Change Phone Language First if Screens Are Unreadable)

Download KakaoTalk from the App Store or Google Play. The signup screen language follows your device language. If you're uncomfortable with Korean screens, change your phone's system language to English (or your preferred language) in Settings before starting signup. The in-app language menu isn't accessible until you complete signup and login (we'll cover app language settings after Step 4).

Step 2 — Select Country Code + Enter Number

On the signup screen, first select your number's country code (e.g., Vietnam +84, USA +1, Thailand +66), then enter your phone number without the country code. If it defaults to +82 (Korea), make sure to change it.

Step 3 — SMS Verification

Enter the verification code that arrives via SMS to the number you entered, and verification is complete. If your home SIM is off or roaming reception doesn't work, you won't receive the SMS, so at the moment of verification, you need to be able to receive texts on that number. Even while roaming, you can often receive verification SMS to your home number, but depending on your carrier and plan, international outbound verification messages may not arrive at all.

Checklist When Verification SMS Doesn't Arrive

Many people get stuck at the verification SMS stage. Check these items from top to bottom.

1. Confirm your home SIM is inserted in the phone. If you swapped to a Korean SIM, you can temporarily reinsert the home SIM just for verification, then remove it.
2. If dual SIM (including eSIM), confirm the number you're verifying is the active line and that SMS reception is set to that number. If it's set to a different line, you won't see the code.
3. Check roaming settings. Even with just data roaming on, SMS reception often works, but some carriers block international SMS reception. Ask your home carrier's customer center "Can I receive international verification SMS?"
4. Check your home carrier's app or web SMS inbox. Depending on country/carrier, you may be able to view received messages on the web even without the SIM (official confirmation required).
5. If still no luck, switch signup to a Korean prepaid SIM (010) number opened with your passport. You can get one at airport/city carrier stores with just your passport, and for KakaoTalk signup, being able to receive SMS is enough.
6. Space out retry attempts. There are user reports that repeating in quick succession can temporarily block verification (there's no published standard for how long to wait after being blocked—official confirmation required). Usually waiting a while and trying again works, and if you keep failing, submit an inquiry at Kakao Customer Center (cs.kakao.com) with a screenshot of the error and the number including country code.

Step 4 — Set Up Profile

Choose a name (profile name) and signup is complete.

Once signed up, set your app language too. Go to Settings (gear icon) → General Settings → Language to choose directly. English, Chinese (Simplified/Traditional), Japanese, and also Vietnamese, Thai, Indonesian and more are supported (as of 2026-08; list may vary by app version). If your desired language isn't in the list, try tapping 'Download Additional Languages'. Once you do this, you can keep your phone language as-is but use KakaoTalk in your preferred language.

How to Let Korean People Add You as a Friend

Even after signing up, there's a reason you can't immediately respond when someone says "Send me a message on KakaoTalk." Accounts with international numbers often don't show up in contact sync even when the other person saves your number (+84, +1, etc.). So the real entry points are your KakaoTalk ID and QR code. Do these three things right after signing up:

1. Create a KakaoTalk ID: More (…) → Settings → Privacy → Kakao Account, then create your KakaoTalk ID. IDs aren't auto-generated at signup, so if you don't make one, people searching for you won't find anything.
2. Turn on 'Allow others to add me by ID': In the same screen (or Settings → Privacy → Manage Friends), enable 'Allow others to add me by ID' to show up in search. Menu names vary slightly by app version (official confirmation required).
3. Have your QR code ready: Friends tab, top right Add Friend (person+ icon) → QR Code → My Code. When someone scans it, they can add you immediately without your number. This is fastest when meeting in person.

It's better to have them add you first. When an international number account messages someone who isn't a friend first, a caution indicator may appear on their screen (see FAQ below), but it disappears once you're mutual friends.

Always Link Your Kakao Account (Email)

While KakaoTalk signup itself uses a phone number, the real key to your account is your Kakao Account. If you link an email and password to your account, you can recover it later even if your number changes or you lose your phone.

1. Go to KakaoTalk More (…) → Settings → Kakao Account
2. Tap Connect Email and enter your email address
3. Enter the verification code sent to your email to complete the link
4. Set a password as well

This step is especially important for those who signed up with international numbers. International numbers are likely to change due to return home, relocation, or carrier cancellation. If you use only the number without email linking and lose that number, account recovery becomes much harder.

Limitations of Korean Service Integration — Kakao Pay and Kakao T Require Separate Verification

This is the most commonly misunderstood part.

• Kakao Pay: To enable transfers and simple payments, you must pass identity verification with a 010 number registered in your real name with a Korean carrier + Alien Registration Number (as of 2026-08). Accounts signed up with international numbers can't get past this screen at all. Prepaid SIMs (010) opened with a passport can be activated on arrival day, but whether that number is accepted for financial/public service identity verification varies by service and carrier (official confirmation required). • Kakao Certificate (identity verification): The Kakao certificate used on sites like Government24 also requires a Korean real-name number. It can't be issued with international number accounts (as of 2026-08, official confirmation required).
• Kakao T: The Kakao T taxi app installs separately but you can log in with the Kakao Account you just created. However, it may require SMS verification again during signup and payment registration (as of 2026-08, official confirmation required), so have a number that can receive texts ready. International-issued cards (Visa, Mastercard, etc.) registration is supported, but auto-payment registration may fail depending on card issuer. In that case, select "Pay driver directly." Once you settle in Korea, get your Alien Registration Card (ARC), and activate a Korean number (typically takes over a month until card receipt), you can proceed with Kakao Pay verification then. Until then, the realistic flow is to use KakaoTalk = messenger/inquiry channel, and handle payments through other means.

How to Use KakaoTalk Channels (Official Accounts)

Even without a Korean number, you can fully use KakaoTalk Channels. Channels are official accounts run by restaurants, hospitals, brands, and government offices, and they're more versatile than you might think.

• Channel search & add: Search for a store name in KakaoTalk search, add the channel, and you can send reservations/inquiries via 1:1 chat. Especially useful for those uncomfortable with phone calls in Korean—you can polish sentences with a translator before sending.
• Reservation confirmations & notifications: Booking confirmations, queue updates, coupons come as channel messages.
• Auto-replies: Many channels have auto-responses for questions about hours, parking, menus, giving you instant answers.

Check in advance whether the restaurant you're visiting accepts reservations only through Naver or also through KakaoTalk channel—it'll make the day-of much smoother.

How to Keep Your Account When Changing Numbers

This is the procedure for keeping your account when switching from an international number → Korean number, or when returning home and switching back to your home country number. There are two paths, and whether chat history is preserved is completely different. Choose which applies to you first.

(a) Changing Number Only on the Same Phone — Chat History Preserved

1. Insert your new number (SIM) into the phone so you can receive texts.
2. Go to More (…) → Settings → Privacy → Kakao Account → Change Phone Number, enter the new number and complete SMS verification. Menu names vary slightly by app version (official confirmation required).
3. Since you didn't delete the app, chats, friends, and channels remain intact. Still, back up just in case before changing.

(b) Changing Phone or Reinstalling App — Without Backup, Chats Disappear

1. Back up first (see prep items below). Without backup, reinstalling means chats can't be recovered.
2. Install KakaoTalk on the new device and verify with SMS to the new number.
3. After verification, on the screen make sure to select 'Log in with existing Kakao Account'. If you tap 'Create new Kakao Account' here, friends, channels, and purchase history get reset. This screen is where mistakes happen most.
4. After logging in, proceed with restoring backup to get your chats back.

What to Prepare Before Backup

• Backup path: More → Settings → Chats → Chat Backup
• 14-day restore window: Backups are temporarily stored on Kakao's side, and according to Kakao guidance, the restore window is 14 days (as of 2026-08). After that, automatic deletion means restoration becomes impossible, so don't back up weeks in advance—do it right before (same day to a few days before) changing number/device.
• Backup password can't be reissued: If you lose it, you can't unlock the backup even if you have it. Write it down somewhere other than your phone (email, notebook).
• Wi-Fi and phone storage space: Chat rooms with lots of photos/videos take a long time to back up and may get interrupted. Plug in charger and proceed on Wi-Fi.
• OS switch means no restore: Switching Android ↔ iPhone may make chat restoration impossible (as of 2026-08, official confirmation required).
• If backup fails or you must switch OS: For rooms you really want to keep, go to chat room → menu → Chat Content → Export Chat to save as text/email. Photos must be saved separately.

Note Down Your Old Number Too

As a security measure, you may be asked to enter a previously verified number (with limited input attempts). If you cancel the number and time passes, many people get blocked because they can't remember, so write down your old number along with Kakao Account email and password.

Transportation & Payment Connection Tips

You've made plans via KakaoTalk, but then get blocked at taxi booking to get there, and blocked again at KTX or express bus booking for weekend trips outside the city.
