December in Korea is mostly free to enjoy outdoors. Three illumination and lantern festivals happen simultaneously in downtown Seoul, and all of them are free admission. It's a cold month, but one that won't drain your wallet.

And in December 2026, Christmas falls on a Friday, creating a 3-day weekend.

One thing I should mention upfront: this article was written in August 2026. Winter events are usually confirmed in October-November, so at this point only a few downtown Seoul events have announced dates, while others are still TBA. I've organized what's confirmed and what's not, so please double-check the official sites before your trip.

December Calendar — Christmas on a Friday

Since Christmas falls on Friday, you get a natural 3-day weekend. December 31 is Thursday and not a public holiday. New Year's Day, January 1 (Fri), is the public holiday, so if you take December 31 off, you can string together four days at year-end.

Christmas in Korea is more about spending time with your partner or friends than a family holiday. So unlike Chuseok or Lunar New Year, most shops and restaurants stay open as usual. That said, popular restaurants and cafes fill up quickly, so book ahead.

Free Seoul Winter Light Festivals

These three events take place in downtown Seoul in December. All completely free, and all near Gwanghwamun and Cheonggyecheon, so you can see them all in one day.

Gwanghwamun Market is a European-style Christmas market. There's a big tree and a carousel. Admission is free but items at the booths cost money. It's right at Gwanghwamun Station (Line 5).

Seoul Lantern Festival floats traditional Korean paper lanterns along the Cheonggyecheon stream. It started in 2009, making this the 18th edition, and has ranked #1 in winter festival satisfaction surveys multiple times. However, Seoul Tourism Organization materials note "subject to change," so dates may shift.

Seoul Light Gwanghwamun is a media facade show projecting images onto the Gwanghwamun building. The New Year's Eve countdown event on December 31 happens here too.

All three are part of the bigger umbrella event called Seoul Winter Festival (Dec 4 – Jan 31, 2027). The city runs this 59-day winter celebration across six locations downtown. The name changed from "Festa" to "Festival" starting in 2026.

SEOULCon — Ring in the New Year at DDP

SEOULCon runs from December 29 (Tue) through January 1, 2027 (Fri) at DDP (Dongdaemun Design Plaza). It's the world's largest global influencer and creator festival. In 2025, 3,600+ participants from 50 countries attended.

The event features K-pop performances, K-fashion and beauty expos, influencer talk shows, esports experiences, and a New Year's Eve countdown concert. Since it targets international visitors, English guidance is available.

However, 2026 admission fees and registration details haven't been announced yet. Past editions used free pre-registration, but we can't assume this year will be free. Nearest station: Dongdaemun History & Culture Park (Lines 2, 4, 5).

New Year's Eve Bell and Year-End Transportation

The Bosingak Bell-Ringing Ceremony on December 31 night is Korea's signature year-end event. It starts around 11 PM, rings 33 times past midnight, and includes celebratory performances. It's free and no reservation needed.

Here's what you absolutely need to know: Jonggak Station will be pass-through only on bell-ringing night.

This is what actually happened last year-end (2025-12-31). The 2026 plan is usually announced around December 26, so check back then.

• Line 1 Jonggak Station did not stop from 11 PM to 1 AM—trains passed through without stopping to prevent crowd buildup.
• Subway service on Lines 1–9, plus Ui-Sinseol and Sillim lines, extended until 2 AM.
• 45 city bus routes passing Bosingak also ran last buses until around 2 AM.
• Roads around Bosingak were completely closed from 6 PM on 12/31 to 7 AM on 1/1.
• Nearby Ttareungi (public bike) stations were also suspended during those hours.

Practical tip: After the ceremony ends, the Jonggak area gets slammed all at once. Walk 10–15 minutes to Euljiro 1-ga or Jongno 3-ga Station instead—it's actually faster and safer.

Events Without Confirmed Dates Yet

Most December winter events get confirmed in October-November. The list below shows what hasn't been announced as of August 2026, so no dates are listed. I'm including last year's info for reference only.

Pyeongchang Trout Festival is in January, not December. Last edition was January 9 – February 9, 2026. If you're thinking ice fishing, schedule your trip for January.

Winter Travel Bottlenecks

December doesn't have major holidays, so ticket competition isn't as fierce overall. But other things get in the way.

• Christmas weekend (12/25–27) and year-end (12/31–1/1) see heavy bookings for regional destinations, especially Gangwon Province where the ski resorts are.
• Many ski resorts and snow festivals are hard to reach by public transit. Check resort shuttle buses and intercity bus schedules first.
• In winter, snow can delay trains and buses. Don't pack your daily schedule too tight.
